Howard County NAACP Youth Council
Work with us - Support us in making a difference in our community.
Did you know - According to the National Education Association (NEA) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), hunger affects children physically, mentally, and academically:
* Hungry children have lower math scores. They are also are more likely to repeat a grade, come to school late, or miss it entirely.
* Inadequate consumption of specific foods, such as fruits, vegetables, or dairy products, is associated with lower grades among students.
* In high school, students who suffer from food insufficiency are more likely to be suspended and have trouble getting along with others.
Food for Thought: Combating Hunger Through
Food and Education
Did you know - There are at least 445 homeless children in Howard County, Maryland and many more children are living without sufficient food. For some, the only time they can count on having a meal is when they are in school and can get free breakfast and lunch. School isn't open on the weekends
so Saturdays and Sundays
can be particularly tough.
Along with our annual Feed the Hungry events, Our new Food for Thought campaign will help reduce hunger among school-aged children.
Our goal in the next year is to provide
at least 25 children and their families with food
every weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and
hold sessions on how to make wise food choices even when you have
limited food options.
To do that, We need your help.
Help us stop the adverse affects hunger has on a child's health, wellness, and academic achievement.
